Teaching Kids About the Enneagram Types: What Children Can Learn from A Modern Personality Test

“Should you teach kids about the Enneagram?” is a question often asked and debated upon.

However, while teaching kids about the Enneagram Types is different from how you would administer it to a grown-up, the results and the impact is quite similar.

Children, who know their enneatypes are more capable of understanding their inherent motivations from an early age and use them to chart out their future progress and growth.

The Enneagram Types Test Helps with Insight

Knowing Enneagram Types can help children understand how they think and function and therefore, adapt their actions accordingly. Download the Enneagram Type Test app today ! Or read more about the Enneagram Test and check Enneagram Type Compatibility

Here is what children can learn about themselves and what parents can learn about their kids from the Enneagram:

1. Dealing with Life Situations

Knowing one’s inherent motivations can help children understand how and why they behave in a different way in the same situation and also, help parents understand why their kids act the way they do. This greater understanding of behavior is key to developing a healthy relationship of the child with their parents and also, with their own sense of self-esteem.

2. Setting Expectations and Goals

When a child has self-knowledge, he or she will be able to set the right goals and expectations and not place undue pressure on himself based on what others are doing.

3. Treating Each Child as Unique and Respecting the Difference

Finally and most importantly, the Enneagram helps both parents and children understand the differences and uniqueness they possess and how casting a child into a mold is not just difficult but also detrimental to their overall personality development. As Elizabeth Wagele writes, “Personality typology explains why we frustrate each other. It’s not always because we don’t think straight or don’t have common sense, it’s often because we’re born with different ways of looking at the world. This produces different values. When we try to walk in others’ shoes (when we learn the Enneagram), our frustration eases and dealing with our family members, students, teachers, or fellow students becomes easier.”

Enneagram and Parenting: How Can Parents Use the Enneagram

The Enneagram is a model for understanding human personality based on a typology of 9 interconnected types. Mainly developed by Oscar Ichazo and Claudio Naranjo, it is also partly based on earlier teachings of G. I. Gurdjieff.

The typology defines nine personality types, which are represented by the points of a geometric figure called an enneagram which also indicates some of the connections between the types. Click the link to understand more about What is the Enneagram ?.

The Enneagram can be used to understand behavior and dynamics in a variety of situations. We’ve already discussed how to use the Enneagram to understand key relationships and today, let’s take a look at one such relationship in-depth, that of, a parent and child. Yes, the Enneagram plays an integral role in parenting as well and knowing your Enneagram type will be helpful both to you and to your children as they grow.

Knowing Your Type Helps You Understand Your Child

One of the most important things that the Enneagram can do is by making you understand how your child and you “fit” together. By working on your own self via the Enneagram, you will be giving your child develop his inherent strengths without enforcing what you think is the ‘right’ thing to do. By understanding your self, you, as a parent, are actually helping your child be more confident, cared for and capable.

Be More Aware as a Parent

Most importantly, the Enneagram makes you an aware parent who knows how his or her personality type influences the ‘expectations’ he has from his child.

For instance, a Type 8 may want their child to be ‘tough’ and realize that the world isn’t an oyster. They may often be harsh and critical of their child in order to toughen them up. Knowing your personality type can help you be more aware of your natural tendencies and adapt accordingly to benefit your child the most and help him develop his best personality without having to conform to your idea of what is best.

Extended DISC FAQs: Commonly Asked Questions about the Extended DISC Personality Test

The Extended Disc, as discussed in our earlier posts, is an increasingly popular form of personality testing and reporting.

It allows businesses and organizations to better understand their people and leverage their inherent strengths and capabilities and use them to assign them appropriate responsibilities.

However, like with all personality tests and reporting tools, the Extended DISC Assessment, too, is open to doubts, questions and uncertainties in the minds of those who want to or have to take it.

Here are some of the common frequently asked questions about the Extended DISC personality test and their answers:

1. How Old Should a Person Be When Taking the Test?

Since the test requires that a person’s personality be fully developed or mature at the time of the test, 18 years is a good age for it to be administered. However, the statements and the questions are designed to be appropriate for those with normal schooling and around 15 years of age.

2. How Can Just 24 Items Generate an Accurate Personality Report?

The key to the Extended Disc personality report or profile does not lie in the questions but in the statistical system that identifies the answering pattern and based on that, whether the results of the test are accurate or note.

The 24 items don’t create the report content. They just create the profile. Knowing the profile allows us to create the report based on how people of a certain profile respond or behave in certain situations.

3. I’ve Heard that the Word Pairing in the Questionnaire is Complex. What if I Can’t Find Appropriate Answers to Some of the Questions?

The Extended Disc test, like most personality tests, is a forced-choice questionnaire. In other words, one shouldn’t overthink an answer but go with instinct and choose a response that suits or describes you the best.

4. By Analyzing my “Work” Personality, How Can a Test Talk About My Natural Style as Well?

By assigning just one “situation”, the test forces you to concentrate when answering the questions. Also, the brain functions at both conscious and unconscious levels so, the “most” answers reflect the conscious style while the “least” answers are used to calculate the unconscious style.

5. Can I Take the Test Twice?

Yes! Especially if there have been significant changes to your environment or your personal life situation.
