Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Tests

Developed in the late 1930’s by psychologist Starke R. Hathaway and psychiatrist J.C. McKinley at the University of Minnesota, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Test or MMPI as it is popularly referred to is most commonly used by mental health professionals to assess and diagnose mental illness. The MMPI has been revised several times and the most recent revision was in 2008 and the test is known as MMPI-2-RF.

The MMPI-2-RF contains 338 questions and takes around 30 to 50 minutes to complete and must be administered by a mental health professional, such as a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist who has been trained in MMPI use. 

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator or Myers-Briggs Personality Tests

Developed by the mother-daughter team of Isabel Briggs Myers and Katherine Briggs, this test is based on Jung’s theory of psychological types. Myers created the first pen-and-pencil version of the test during the 1940s and it was initially tested on friends and family. By taking the Myers-Briggs Personality Test or MBTI as it is popularly referred to, people are identified as having one of 16 personality types, hence you may have heard people describe themselves as ESTJ or INFP.

The goal of the MBTI is to allow people who take the test to gain a deeper understanding of their own personalities including their likes, dislikes, strengths, weaknesses, possible career preferences and compatibility with other people.

The test is based on 4 scales- Extraversion-Intraversion, Sensing-Intuition, Thinking-Feeling and Judging-Perceiving.

It is important though to remember that the MBTI is not a test in that there are no right or wrong answers. And no one type is better than the others.

The current version of the test includes 93 forced-choice questions in the North American version, and 88 forced-choice questions in the European version. Every question has two different options that the respondent must choose from.

 16-PF Personality Questionnaire Personality Tests

Developed by Raymond Cattell, who took the work of Gordon Allport, and identified 171 characteristics of personalities and then, whittled it down to 16 key personality factors, such as abstractedness, apprehension, perfectionism, privateness, reasoning, tension, warmth and more and gives you a list of personality types

The 16 PF Personality questionnaire is  quite popular in areas of business and marital counseling. The test consists of forced-choice questions in which the respondent must choose one of three different alternatives.
