The Enneagram is a model for understanding human personality based on a typology of 9 interconnected types. Mainly developed by Oscar Ichazo and Claudio Naranjo, it is also partly based on earlier teachings of G. I. Gurdjieff.

The Enneagram can be used to understand behavior and dynamics in a variety of situations. We’ve already discussed how to use the Enneagram to understand key relationships and today, let’s take a look at one such relationship in-depth, that of, a parent and child. Yes, the Enneagram plays an integral role in parenting as well and knowing your Enneagram type will be helpful both to you and to your children as they grow.
Knowing Your Type Helps You Understand Your Child
One of the most important things that the Enneagram can do is by making you understand how your child and you “fit” together. By working on your own self via the Enneagram, you will be giving your child develop his inherent strengths without enforcing what you think is the ‘right’ thing to do. By understanding your self, you, as a parent, are actually helping your child be more confident, cared for and capable.
Be More Aware as a Parent
Most importantly, the Enneagram makes you an aware parent who knows how his or her personality type influences the ‘expectations’ he has from his child.
For instance, a Type 8 may want their child to be ‘tough’ and realize that the world isn’t an oyster. They may often be harsh and critical of their child in order to toughen them up. Knowing your personality type can help you be more aware of your natural tendencies and adapt accordingly to benefit your child the most and help him develop his best personality without having to conform to your idea of what is best.
