Understanding Enneagram: What Is It and What are the 9 Personality Types

The Enneagram

derived from the Greek words ennea [nine] and gramma [something written or drawn] is a model of human personality, which consists of 9 personality types.

This personality system combines traditional wisdom and modern psychology into a powerful tool for understanding ourselves as well as develop better relationship with the people in our lives. The Enneagram helps us to understand our own and other people’s personality patterns and thereby help us to have a stronger and more in-depth understanding of ourselves as well as the people in our environment.

The Enneagram is one of the newer personality systems and places stress on the strengths and potentials of each personality type as well as its inherent problems.

In the book, The Enneagram Made Easy, authors Renee Baron and Elizabeth Wagele write, “ The Enneagram teaches that early in life we learned to feel safe and to cope with our family situations and personal circumstances by developing a strategy based on our natural talents and abilities.”

The Enneagram and Personality Types

According to Baron and Wagele, the principles of the Ennegram hold that, “People of the same type have the same basic motivations and view the world in some fundamentally similar ways. Variations within each type stem from such factors as maturity, parents’ types, birth order, cultural values, and inherent traits such as being naturally introverted or extroverted.”

The Enneagram outlines 9 distinct personality types:

Enneagram type 1: The Perfectionist
Enneagram type 2: The Helper
Enneagram type 3: The Achiever
Enneagram type 4: The Romantic
Enneagram type 5: The Investigator
Enneagram type 6: The Loyalist
Enneagram type 7: The Enthusiast
Enneagram type 8: The Challenger
Enneagram type 9: The Peacemaker
